The Commons Apartments

Hobart

The Commons Hobart is a seven-storey multi-residential building with a combination of one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments totalling 30 in all along with two commercial tenancies located on the ground floor street frontages which are framed by a pocket park which is constructed with recycled red bricks from the nearby Parliament Square demolition.

This development was completed by Vos Construction and Joinery Pty Ltd for Melbourne based developers Small Giants.

The intent of this building is that it be carbon neutral through the employment of sustainable building practices. Example include passive heating, use of some locally recycled products along with carbon offsets by the developers, and an overall thermal mass obtained by the use of solar panels, double glazing, hydronic heating and thermal insulation.

To further this carbon neutral theme the basement has parking and charging stations for two electric vehicles and around 30 bicycles.

There was an archaeological dig conducted in the area of some known previous buildings during the excavation phase and artifacts that were uncovered were catalogued and retained for future display in a common area of the building.

Internally the apartments boast a high level of finish inclusive of timber overlay flooring, exposed concrete feature walls, built in robes, flexible spaces and natural light via large window frontages and an internal light well.
