Award-Winning Local Developers seek to transform Macquarie Wharf No. 1

Award-winning local firm, the Vos Group, will lodge a Development Application with the Hobart City Council for the redevelopment of Macquarie Wharf No. 1 site within the next few days.

Following an extensive national Expressions of Interest campaign which began in 2011, negotiations with the landowner Tasports has progressed to a stage where they are pleased to grant consent for the lodgement of the DA.

Vos Group Executive Chairman Michael Vos said that he and his people are thrilled to be both the developer and builder of this exciting development and are looking forward to work commencing once the planning approvals and other requirements have been met.

“The aim of the development is to build on the success of the Vos Group’s award winning Henry Jones complex by introducing more activities designed to attract visitors to the Hunter Street side of Sullivan’s Cove as well as enhance and improve open space and public access to the waterfront.

“The team that created the highly successful Henry Jones complex has been re-formed to undertake the Macquarie Wharf No. 1 Redevelopment.  It comprises Circa Morris-Nunn Architects, Stanton Management Group and Vos Construction and Joinery Pty Ltd.

“The project involves building a luxury hotel of up to 110 rooms together with 3000 sqm of retail space incorporating restaurants, cafes, provedores, galleries, etc.  It is expected to create at least 100 jobs during the 12 month construction period with a further 60 to 80 ongoing jobs once the hotel and retailers are operational.  The estimated construction cost (including tenancy fitout) is $35 million.”

Minister for Infrastructure the Honourable David O’Byrne said “the Tasmanian Government is committed to facilitating the best outcome for Sullivan’s Cove with any development needing to consider both the nature of a working port environment together with the community and tourism aspects of the Cove.”

Tasports Chairman Dan Norton commented that “the proposal is mixed use and will be primarily hospitality and tourism focused. Following the completion earlier this year at Macquarie Wharf No.2 of a $7 million development dedicated to
